ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings hammered the Anaheim Ducks 6-2 last night to advance to the NHL’s Western Conference finals against Chicago, the defending Stanley Cup champions. Justin Williams and Marian Gaborik (GAB’-uh-rihk) scored power-play goals while the Kings were building a 5-0 lead. Jonathan Quick stopped 25 shots for the Kings, who are 6-0 in elimination games.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ray Shero has been dismissed after eight seasons as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The move comes days after the Pens blew a three-games-to-one lead and lost to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse said the new general manager will determine whether head coach Dan Bylsma (BYLZ’-muh) is retained for another season.
UNDATED (AP) — Donald Sterling is prepared to fight his fine handed down by the NBA. An attorney for the Los Angeles Clippers owner has written the NBA stating that Sterling does not intend to pay the $2.5 million fine imposed by the league for racist comments, according to a person with knowledge of the letter’s contents. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life and imposed the fine following the release late last month of a recording in which Sterling makes racist remarks.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) —The Oklahoma City Thunder will spend the rest of the postseason without forward and defensive specialist Serge Ibaka (ih-BAH’-kah) because of a left calf injury. Ibaka was injured during the third quarter of Thursday night’s win over the Clippers, which put Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals against San Antonio. He averaged 12.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 13 postseason games.
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Brendon Todd is the leader at 8-under heading into the third round of the Byron Nelson Championship near Dallas. Todd birdied his final two holes for a 6-under-par 64 that leaves him two shots ahead of eight players, including Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey. Casey was over par before matching the PGA Tour record for the best score on a back nine, an 8-under 27 with six birdies and an eagle that led to a 7-under 63.
