Jason Collins has become the first openly gay athlete to play in one of the “big four” major sports. Collins has been out since last year, but he is now actively playing on a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets. It’s a major step for gay rights acceptance, but it’s also a bit of a one-up…
Collins dropped off the radar after he came out, because he wasn’t actively playing for any professional team at the time, and didn’t get any invitations to any NBA training camps.
And then came Michael Sam. Sam is still in college, but is likely a mid-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. He came out to the world this year, although his team mates already knew it. And based on his stats, he’s an odds-on favorite to be the first openly gay active player in pro football. And while that’s going to be a remarkable achievement, it means he won’t be the first guy ever. And nobody remembers the “second guy in history”.
