Man Charged Following Union County Shooting That Left One Dead, Two Injured; Victim Identified

The Latest:

Detectives have charged the man responsible for a fatal shooting in Union County earlier this week.

Jeremy Carpenter has been charged with Voluntary Manslaughter in connection with the death of 67-year-old Joseph M. Kisiah Sr.

Authorities say Carpenter has a child with a Kisiah family member and the Kisiah family frequently provides child care.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Department, on Monday, August 26th, 2019, Joseph Kisiah Jr. and Carpenter engaged in an altercation after Kisiah Jr. confronted Carpenter for assaulting Kisiah Sr.’s wife the previous day, for which Carpenter was arrested and released after posting bond.  Detectives say Carpenter returned to the Kisiah residence on Monday to apologize for the incident on Sunday.

After Monday’s initial altercation, Carpenter went to his vehicle to retrieve a handgun.  Kisiah Jr. allegedly tried to disarm Carpenter inside the vehicle before the gun went off, striking Carpenter in the hand.

As they continued to struggle, detectives say Carpenter fired another round that went through Kisiah Jr., and struck Kisiah Sr., who was standing behind him.

Kisiah Sr. was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carpenter left the scene and encountered a Union County Sheriff’s Deputy, and told him about what had transpired at the Kisiah residence.

He was detained until detectives were able to come examine his vehicle and take the gun as evidence.

Carpenter was treated and released for the gunshot wound to the hand.  Kisiah Jr. is recovering from the injuries he sustained in the shooting.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey stated, “Detectives have conducted numerous interviews, analyzed evidence and carefully considered the facts that happened before, during and after this situation before filling this charge. An innocent man tragically lost his life and all of this could have been avoided if the suspect had not picked up the gun when he had a chance to leave.”

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call for service around 12:20 p.m., Monday afternoon.

Arriving deputies located two men suffering from gunshot wounds.  One victim was dead upon the deputies’ arrival, and the other was shot in the chest.

A third man later identified as 24-year-old Jeremy Benson Carpenter had left the scene just before deputies arrived.  A deputy in the area saw Carpenter’s vehicle about a mile away and detained him.

Detectives say Carpenter and one of the male victims had a physical altercation that prompted Carpenter to go to his vehicle and get a handgun.

Authorities say a struggle over the gun led to Carpenter being shot in the hand and one victim being shot in the chest.  Another round also discharged during the struggle, fatally wounding the second victim.

Carpenter and the surviving victim were both taken to CMC-Main and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials say the deputies had previously responded to the same residence at about 7:20 p.m., on Sunday evening regarding a domestic disturbance.

At that time, deputies determined that Carpenter had assaulted and injured the wife of the man, who was shot and killed on Monday.

The female victim was treated and released for a head injury.   Deputies arrested and charged Carpenter with Assault on a Female.  He was jailed before posting bond Monday morning.

Detectives say that Carpenter has a child with the a relative of the residents of the home where the incident occurred and that the homeowners frequently provide child care.

No charges have been filed following the shooting and the victims’ names have not been released.
