Lake Arbor Residents Return to Court

CHARLOTTE, NC — Some Lake Arbor apartment residents have a new place to call home, while others are fighting to keep an eviction off their record.

Residents were back in court Tuesday after a two-week extension to find a place to stay expired. Some tenants have settled with the west Charlotte complex. Others are saying, not so fast.

Lake Arbor resident Marie McKinney told WCCB the property manager told her she was $8,000 behind in rent, which she says she paid, until there was nobody to give the money to.

“I’m not trying to get over on nobody,” said McKinney. “I’m just trying to do what’s right for me and my family. I work too hard to let my family go down like that.”

Charlotte City Council updated the housing ordinance Monday night. Property owners will now be fined $100 a day, starting the day after they are found to be in violation. The change takes effect January 1.
