Β CHARLOTTE, NC — There will be an added police presence in uptown Charlotte this week for Speed Street. Β The city has declared the racing celebration an “extraordinary event” for the third year in a row. Β
Thousands of people will pack the heart of uptown beginning on Thursday. Β The declaration gives police more power to control the crowds. Β Officers will also focus on Charlotte’s teen curfew and alcohol enforcement.
Crews will start closing roads Wednesday to get ready for Speed Street. Β South Tryon Street will be blocked from Stonewall to West Trade Street. Β Part of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be one lane only. Β Roads are expected to reopen Sunday morning.
