CHARLOTTE, NC — Dozens of dogs and cats rescued from a puppy mill in Rutherford County are being treated in Charlotte.

The Humane Society rescued 50 dogs and 6 cats from a suspected hoarder’s home Friday.  Many are suffering from skin, eye and ear infections and were living in feces and filth.  Investigators say the elderly woman was charged for animal cruelty back in 2002.

“She was definitely way over her head in caring for all these dogs,” said Jorge Ortega, VP of Operations at the Charlotte Humane Society.  “The team needed respirators to go on her property, so you can tell how bad the conditions were.”

Vets at the Humane Society will examine and threat 23 of the dogs, starting this weekend, before they can go up for adoption.
