CHARLOTTE, NC — Tense moments at Panthers training camp in Spartanburg. Teammates had to break up a brawl between Cam Newton and cornerback Josh Norman. The fight went viral as soon as it ended.
Cam Newton and Josh Norman have been “chirping”, or talking trash to each other, since training camp began. Monday, things went from a friendly competition, to a fight between teammates.
It happened when Norman intercepted one of Newton’s passes and tried to run it back for a touchdown. Cam ran him down, trying to keep him out of the endzone. Norman gave him a stiff arm to the face, Cam didn’t like it, and the two ended up bringing things to the ground.
“I wasn’t pleased about the fight. I wasn’t pleased about who was in the fight, but again, I understand it and I get that part of it,” said head coach Ron Rivera. “I think the thing that a lot of guys took from it is ‘Hey, he’s just like any of us; he’s willing to fight.’ Cam got up and talked a little bit to the guys about it. He understands his responsibility, and he understands, you know, what we’re trying to do as a football team.”
The team broke down the final huddle by chanting “family” after practice.
