Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Resource Officer Charged with Indecent Liberties

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have charged a Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Resource Officer with indecent liberties with a minor.

According to investigators, 61-year-old William Stitt inappropriately touched and fondled a known victim on Friday. On Monday, detectives began a criminal investigation on Stitt. Officials say the victim in this case was not someone that Stitt would have come into contact with during the scope of his employment.

Stitt was taken into custody Tuesday evening. Stitt is a former CMPD officer. He was hired by the department on September 28, 1977 and retired on July 1, 2005. School officials say Stitt was hired as a school resource officer on August 1, 2005. He has been been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal charges.

Anyone with information concerning this case or the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Detective O’Dell is the lead detective in this case.
