PLAINS, Ga. (AP) β Jimmy Carter’s pastor says members of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, are praying for the former president, who announced last week that cancer has spread from his liver to other parts of his body.
The Rev. Jeremy Shoulta said Friday that it feels “almost like a family member has been diagnosed and we’re treating it that way as a small church.”
Shoulta says the 90-year-old Carter taught his usual Sunday school lesson at Maranatha on Aug. 2, the day before his liver surgery, and is scheduled to teach eight more classes through October. But the former president noted that his schedule will be rearranged so he can undergo treatment.
Shoulta says people from all over the world attend Carter’s Sunday school classes “to hear him talk about his faith, what it means to live the Christian faith and also how we can go about our lives in a more positive, meaningful way as we seek to relate more lovingly to our neighbors.”
