RALEIGH, NC —Β North Carolina senators are offering veteran teachers the choice between a double-digit pay increase, or keeping their job protections. Β The proposed senate budget will include raises of more than 10 percent for teachers who give up career status. Β
Charles Smith, president of the Charlotte- Mecklenburg Association of Educators, calls this is an attempt by the General Assembly to intimidate teachers. Β “The General Assembly is using teachers as pawns in a game,” he said, “and we’re always the losing part of the game.”
Giving up tenure rights would increase the state-supplied salary of a teacher with five years of experience from almost $31,000 this year to $35,000 next year.
