CMPD Investigating Church Vandalism As Possible Hate Crime

CHARLOTTE, NC — Vandals target a church in south Charlotte.  Now, police are looking into whether it’s a hate crime.

The vandals left anti-gay slurs on the doors and sign at Wedgewood Church off Tyvola Road.  The LGBT-friendly church is known for celebrating diversity.

The pastor tells WCCB Charlotte the graffiti showed up between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

“We’ve made a lot of progress, and I celebrate that, but there’s much work to be done,” Rev. Dr. Chris Ayers.  “And I’m hoping that people for whom this is a difficult situation will get to know some LGBT people.”
