RALEIGH, NC — A new challenge to same-sex marriage in North Carolina.

A federal judge says Republican State House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate Leader Phil Berger can intervene in two pending cases.  That means they will be able to appeal whether Virginia’s same-sex marriage decision applies here in North Carolina.

Here in Mecklenburg County, 25 same-sex couples filed for marriage licenses Tuesday.  That brings the two-day total to 87.

It could be at least a month before same-sex couple in South Carolina learn whether they can get married.  A district court judge gave attorneys until next week to file motions in a case challenging the state’s gay marriage ban.  The case was on hold until last week’s Supreme Court Decision.
