Β CHARLOTTE, NC —Β These days, it seems you can’t even mow the lawn without someone targeting your home. Β CMPD is warning residents to be careful with when, and for how long, they leave their garage doors open.
People are casing neighborhoods and stealing stuff out of open garages. Β Officer Chris Kopp in the University City Division tells WCCB it’s a crime that happens in less than 15 seconds. Β They’ve seen a spike in the last two weeks.
“In one case we had, a homeowner was moving his lawn and two bicycles were taken while he was in his own front yard,” said Officer Kopp. Β “And we kinda go through this every year. Β It kinda spikes around, once the weather starts getting nice.”
Police haven’t made any arrests yet, but they have recovered some of the stolen property. Β They recommend that if you can’t see your garage door, it should be closed even if you’re home.
