CHARLOTTE, NC — The idea of single-gender classrooms in some Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is stealing headlines, but it’s only one of several ideas for new magnet programs.

They were presented at a school board meeting Tuesday. Β Other possibilities include a museum magnet, a Montessori high school, or career training magnets. Β School board member Rhonda Lennon tells WCCB those ideas, along with single-gender classrooms, are a long way off from implementation.

“It’s something we’re going to add to our magnet review, what the cost of that kind of program and what the demand for that kind of program is, what are the benefits,” said Lennon. Β “Anything we do is going to have to be an academic benefit to the students. Β So we’re going to let the staff evaluate that and bring us the recommendations.”

An outside group is currently reviewing CMS’ current magnet program to asses what’s working and what needs improvement. Β The absolute earliest any of these new programs could be voted on is November, with implementation in 2016.
