DAVIDSON, NC — Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was at Davidson College Thursday afternoon, answering questions from students, faculty and President Carol Quillen.

The Supreme Court’s first Hispanic judge talked about how her life and experiences have impacted her nearly 25 years as a judge. Β Sotomayor also addressed misconceptions about the Supreme Court, and how the media and politicians have changed the public’s view.

“You’re not really thinking about what we’re doing in those ways,” she said. Β “You’re thinking about it in the ways that politicians have labeled it. Β And that’s what’s become dangerous to us as an institution.”

President Obama nominated justice Sotomayor in 2009. Β She has championed issues like defendants’ rights, reform of the criminal justice system and issues of race, gender and ethnic identity.
