HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — CMPD officials say a motorcycle officer with the Huntersville Police Department, who was part of the motorcade procession for First Lady Melania Trump, collided with another vehicle on November 2nd.
Police say officer Lawing was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
First Lady Melania Trump says she checked in with the injured officer this evening after speaking at a MAGA rally in Huntersville, N.C.
Police say shortly before 3:30 p.m., while CMPD and HPD were escorting the First Lady from Wilson Air Center to Magnolia Woods, officer Lawing crashed on Statesville Road in Huntersville.
Lawing made a U-turn on West Woodlawn Road near Interstate 77 to return to the motorcade route, and road conditions caused the him to travel into oncoming lanes of traffic with his emergency equipment activated, according to a news release.
Detectives say before Lawing could rejoin the motorcade, a driver of a 2012 Honda Accord made a left turn off of West Woodlawn Road onto the on-ramp for Interstate 77 south and was hit on the driver’s side by Lawing on his motorcycle.
Police say the driver of the Honda was not injured in the crash, and the investigation into this accident is ongoing.
