State Senator Shadows Local Teacher Assistant

CHARLOTTE, NC — A state Senator is trying to prove how important local teacher assistants are by being one.
Senator Joyce Waddell shadowed a Kindergarten teaching assistant Friday at Irwin Academic Center. The state is funding TA jobs through September 18th, even though lawmakers haven’t settled on a state spending plan.
But once that funding runs out, more than 500 CMS teacher assistants could be out of a job.
“A TA is extremely important,” said Senator Waddell. “A TA does the work of an assistant teacher in a classroom, and there are many of the duties that they do, that the classroom has difficulty functioning without them.”
The state budget was supposed to be passed July 1.
