(AP) β South Carolina football players will wear stickers on their helmets this season to honor the nine people who died in a shooting at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston this past June. Coach Steve Spurrier says the team will have a decal with a Palmetto Tree with nine doves around it for the nine black victims at the church June 17.
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (AP) β Erik Jones won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race yesterday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park to take the series points lead. Jones beat Canadian road racer Alex Tagliani to the first turn off a restart with two laps left on the road course and easily held off two-time defending series champion Matt Crafton.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β The Carolina Panthers have cut eight players, including two wide receivers. Carolina released wide receivers Paul Browning and Avius Capers, fullback Lee Ward, tight end Dallas Walker, linebacker Kevin Reddick, defensive end Steve Miller and punter Matt Wile. It also terminated the contract of veteran offensive tackle Tony Hills.
ATLANTA (AP) β Jacoby Ellsbury hit a three-run homer, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew each added a two-run shot and the New York Yankees routed the Atlanta Braves 20-6 yesterday to finish a three-game sweep. All three homers came with two outs.
