Mountain Snow with Cold Air Across the Carolinas
Cold air building across the Carolinas with below average temperatures through the week.
The very strong area of low pressure is now in the northeast, but we will continue to see impacts from this powerful system across the Carolinas. Temperatures will drop through the remainder of the day with increasing moisture this evening/overnight in the mountains. There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect for Avery county and a Winter Weather Advisory for Ashe and Watauga counties until 12 PM Tuesday.
How much snow?1-2 inches for lower elevations in the mtn. (Boone, Blowing Rock)4-6 inches for higher elevations (Beech mtn, Sugar mtn etc. – for those above 5,000 feet)Flurries north of I-40 across portions of the Foothills.
With cold air building in behind the front – it is going to get cold! Expect low temperatures this evening to bottom out near 30 degrees across the Piedmont and teens and 20s across the mountains. Add wind gusting up to 40 mph and the wind chill in the mountains will be in the single digits Tuesday morning. Temperatures will only warm to the 40s across the Piedmont and 30s in the Mountains on Tuesday with very cold air in place through the evening/early AM Wednesday and Thursday morning. We stay dry through most of the week with below average temperatures.
