CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives say on January 6th the driver of a stolen 2019 Toyota Highlander collided with another vehicle causing serious injuries on Tom Hunter Road in north Charlotte.
Officers say after receiving a license plate reader hit for a stolen vehicle on West Sugar Creek Road, shortly after 5:30 p.m., they attempted to stop the stolen vehicle on North Tryon Street, but when the suspect refused to stop, members of CMPD’s Aviation Unit followed the Toyota from above.
Members of the Aviation Unit say the Toyota crossed the centerline and hit a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt on Tom Hunter Road before fleeing again, but was caught a short time later.
The Chevrolet driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to a news release.
Police say speeding and reckless driving by the Toyota driver are factors in the crash, and neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Officers say the Toyota driver will be served with warrants for their arrest after being released from the hospital.
Police say the investigation remains active, and ask anyone with more information to call Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
