Β CONCORD, NC — A Swiss battery manufacturer plans to bring at least 2,500 jobs to the Charlotte area over the next three years. Β Alevo will produce utility-scale batteries at the old Philip Morris Cigarette plant in Concord.
These aren’t batteries like you’d use in your remote control, but large-scale ones used to help power companies meet energy demands. Β The batteries will be shipped around the world.
“We’ve going to be manufacturing batteries here in Concord, North Carolina and shipping them to China, how about that? Β That’s a pretty good, novel concept, isn’t it?” said Rep. Richard Hudson (R, NC).
Alevo says the batteries also help reduce energy waste. Β They keep utility companies from having to power fossil-fueled plants up and down to meet electricity demand.
