Low Water Levels Frustrate Labor Day Weekend Boaters

CHARLOTTE, NC – The drought conditions are impacting the holiday weekend for boaters.

“It’s dangerous out there! I’ve hit ground like four times already this year,” says Boater Chris Bradshaw.

Bradshaw says he’s having to take extra precautions on Lake Norman.

“You gotta go way far out from the peninsulas cause any place where it’s like even a little bit shallow, you just gotta move way over,” he explains.

Many people coming on the usually busy Labor Day weekend are being greeted by signs saying that boat ramps are closed because of low lake levels.

“I’ve seen about two or three boats come in and then turn away because they can’t back in,” says boater John Haake.

Lake Norman is down five and a half feet this summer due to the lack of rain.
