54-Year-Old Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Vehicle In Matthews

MATTHEWS, N.C. — An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and killed in Matthews Sunday night, according to police.

Officers responded to East Independence Boulevard, near a shopping center, around 11 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.  When officers arrived, they found a man, identified as 54-year-old Jorge Camargo, with severe injuries from the crash.

Police say Camargo was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

An initial investigation determined that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on East Independence Boulevard prior to the Windsor Square Drive intersection. There are currently no charges filed against the driver, according to a news release.

This continues to be an ongoing investigation conducted by the Matthews Police Department Accident Reconstruction Unit.
