Record Low Broken for Charlotte

Unseasonably cold temperatures blanketed the Carolinas following a strong cold front yesterday. Freeze Warnings went into effect overnight ahead of the drastic drop in temperature. Morning lows fell into the 20s and 30s.  Lows fell to the 20s and 30s areawide – breaking a few records overnight, including one set decades ago in the Queen City. Charlotte broke a previous record of 33 degrees for April 22 set back in 1978 when temps fell to 32 degrees overnight.

This also makes for one of the coldest mornings this late in the Spring Season on record. On average the last freeze of the season is in early April. For the higher elevations, this usually occurs late April to early May. Charlotte has only seen freezing temperatures (below 32) after April 22 twice before. The coldest temperature was 31 degrees on April 25 in 2005. The latest freeze of the season was May 2, 1963.
