One Dead, Another Injured In East Charlotte Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say that one person has died after a crash in east Charlotte early Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to Central Avenue near Rosehaven Drive shortly after 2 a.m after reports of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers found a Dodge Journey that had struck a tree.  The two occupants of the vehicle sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to the hospital by MEDIC. Police say the driver, identified Christopher Maurice Hames, was pronounced dead.

According to a news release, an investigation indicates that the Dodge was traveling eastbound on Central Avenue toward Winterfield place when the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove onto the center median, striking a tree. Evidence gathered at the scene by detectives indicate that both passengers were not wearing a seatbelt during the time of the incident and excessive speed was a contributing factor to the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about this case is asked to call Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169.  The public can also leave information anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
