He’s the top educator in Mecklenburg County, at least for a couple more days. This afternoon, Dr. Heath Morrison announced he is stepping down as the Superintendent of CMS. The Board of Education was quick to praise Dr. Morrison for what he’s done in our community. Something educators might not hear often enough.
Dr. Morrison’s last day will be Thursday. He joined the school district back in 2012. He ushered in the Common Core era, pushed for more education choices like magnet schools, and reorganized the system’s structure. He supported changing school schedules to help cut back on summer learning loss, and different bell schedules. And was the the helm as the system went though enrollment growth, pushing for more teachers, better salaries and bigger budget, which caused some conflict between the school board and County Commission.
But as much as he may have impacted everybody connected to the schools, it’s the one-on-one connections we really remember: those teachers who actually inspired you.
Our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, inspires all of us, but what about you?
