CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a 31-year-old man died Friday night after crashing into several small boulders and a tree outside the National Whitewater Center in Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives have identified the victim in this case as 31-year-old Matthew Hughes.
Officers say they responded to the crash on Whitewater Center Parkway around 7:45 p.m. on June 18th, after several 911 calls.
At the scene, officers found a gray 2014 Honda Accord in the median beside a tree that had been hit.
The driver of the Honda, Hughes, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
Police say Hughes was heading north on Whitewater Center Parkway, towards Belmeade Drive, when he lost control and slide sideways into a median on his left.
Detectives say speed appears to be a factor in the deadly crash, and alcohol impairment is suspected.
The investigation into this case remains active and ongoing.
