Mecklenburg County Detention Officer Cut With ‘Homemade Weapon’

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — A Mecklenburg County Detention Center officer was hurt after an incident with an inmate Friday night, according to a news release.

The alternation happened around 9 p.m. at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center – Central.

Detention Officer A. Turnage was cut with a “homemade weapon” and bitten by 42-year-old resident James Holmes, during a medication pass, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Turnage was transported to Presbyterian Hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.The detention officer has been released from the hospital to continue care at home.

“I have been in constant contact with Officer Turnage and she is in good spirits,” says Sheriff Garry L. McFadden. “I was at the hospital when she was released. As Sheriff, the safety of our detention professionals and residents is always a concern. The MCSO Investigative Unit will thoroughly investigate the incident to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.”
