CHARLOTTE, NC — Some neighbors say they are dealing with racism and deplorable living conditions at a Charlotte apartment complex.  They met with the city’s immigration task force Wednesday night.  Residents at the Mountcrest Apartments off Central Avenue first showed WCCB’s Audrina Bigos some of their issues on Monday.  They include mildewing air condition systems, sinking floors, and rusty faucets.

Activists say 99 percent of the complex’s residents are immigrants.  “The few people that we’ve talked to who are not immigrants have actually told us that their maintenance requests are taken care of as soon as they ask, said Hector Vaca of Action NC.

Fifty residents signed a petition to get city code enforcement involved.  An inspection found 46 violations in eight empty apartments.  They include windows and doors falling off the hinges and holes and cracks in walls.  Code enforcement plans more inspections in July.
