Β CHARLOTTE, NC — The re-imaging of Charlotte’s historic Cherry neighborhood is forcing out many longtime residents. Β The modest homes in this traditionally black area are being replaced with new, high-dollar developments.
The newest announcement has Charlotte-based builder Saussy Burbank planning 43 new homes along Main, Baxter, Luther and Eli Streets. Β Prices for the first offerings range between $550,000 and $620,000.
“For them to build those houses over here, it’s like they almost know that these people are not going to be able to move and come back. Β It’s like almost being forced out,” said one Cherry resident.
The first new Saussy Burbank homes in Cherry are expected to be complete by next summer.
