CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The city of Charlotte will begin scrutiny of airport finances due to concerns about how leases of airport property to the city are being handled. City Manager Ron Carlee said leases for the Animal Care & Control Center building, a police helicopter hanger and Fire Station 30 were either not reported properly to the FAA or not paid back. The city has hired a consultant as part of an airport audit. Former Aviation Director Jerry Orr said it’s a waste of money.
“We were influenced to do things that we wouldn’t normally go out and do. But I don’t think the FAA will have any problem with it at all,” Orr said.
The consultant’s review could cost close to $100,000.The city and a newly created commission are locked in a battle over who will control the airport.
