NEWTON, NC – An autopsy Monday could reveal the cause of a high school counselor’s death in Catawba County. A friend found Maggie Daniels dead inside her Newton townhome Saturday.

Students gathered at Discovery High School Sunday to remember her.

“Pretty much still in shock. I don’t think it’s sunk in for everyone yet. That she’s really, gone,” says student Danielle Catena.

Catena says the loss of is painful because of the close connection Daniels had with her students.
“She would put your needs before herself, so she was definitely the best guidance counselor I’ve ever had,” Catena says.

The former teacher of the year in 2011 taught English and coached basketball for years at Newton-Convover High. More recently she moved to Discovery to become a counselor.

“She always made me feel important. I would see her in the hallway, and she would smile and wave,” says student Sierra Warnes.

Police are calling the death suspicious, though neighbors say she didn’t show any obvious sign of injury. Investigators searched the scene for clues late into the night Saturday and towed away Daniels’ car.

“The pieces don’t add together. And she was such a beautiful, amazing person, and just the thought of anything bad happening to her makes me sick to my stomach,” Catena says.

Neighbors remain on edge until they find out what happened. “I really don’t have a clue, but it’s such a sad loss. I mean, you know, if someone did something, she doesn’t deserve it,” says neighbor Marian Dillingham.
