RALEIGH, NC — Mandatory evacuations begin at 5am Thursday for residents and visitors to Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks.  Hurricane Irene, back in 2011, washed out part of the highway linking Hatteras Island and the mainland.  It took more than a month to re-open Highway 12, with repairs costing around $10 million.

Governor Pat McCrory wants people to take the danger from Arthur seriously.  “Almost every casualty we have had during storms occur typically right before or after a storm, when people, again, get too comfortable when there is still potential danger,” he said.

Right now, officials, hotel owners and would-be vacationers as far north as New England are carefully watching Arthur’s track.
