Β RALEIGH, NC —Β Mandatory evacuations begin at 5am Thursday for residents and visitors to Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks. Β Hurricane Irene, back in 2011, washed out part of the highway linking Hatteras Island and the mainland. Β It took more than a month to re-open Highway 12, with repairs costing around $10 million. Β

Governor Pat McCrory wants people to take the danger from Arthur seriously. Β “Almost every casualty we have had during storms occur typically right before or after a storm, when people, again, get too comfortable when there is still potential danger,” he said.

Right now, officials, hotel owners and would-be vacationers as far north as New England are carefully watching Arthur’s track.
