INDIANAPOLIS (AP) β The National semifinals in the men’s NCAA Tournament take place tomorrow at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The first game in the home of the NFL Colts has Michigan State playing Duke with Kentucky squaring off against Wisconsin in the second contest. The title game will follow Monday night in the same venue.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) β Shaka (SHAH’-kuh) Smart is finally leaving Virginia Commonwealth University. Since leading the Rams to the Final Four in 2011 he has been rumored for just about every coaching vacancy in college basketball. Now, he has found the right school as the VCU Sports Information Director has confirmed that Smart is leaving for the University of Texas. Smart has won at least 26 games in each of his six seasons at VCU.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) β Billy Donovan has a new contract with Florida to coach the Gators. The one-year extension raises his annual salary to about $4 million and keeps him under contract through the 2019-20 season. The deal was agreed to last summer and signed in December.
HOUSTON (AP) β Scott Piercy starts the day in front at the PGA’s Houston Open. He shot a first-round 63 which gave him a one-shot lead over Shawn Stefani. Phil Mickelson is in contention after opening with a 6-under-par 66.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) β The second round of the LPGA’s ANA Inspiration tournament in Rancho Mirage, California, is today. The leader at the end of play yesterday was Morgan Pressel, who shot a 67 which was good for a one stroke lead over Ai Miyazato (eye mee-ah-zah-TOH’).
