CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives are investigating a fatal crash in south Charlotte after a 76-year-old woman was hit and killed by an SUV on Friday.
Officers responded to the collision at the intersection of Midway Park Drive and Walnut Branch Lane on September 10th around 6:30 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found a pedestrian in the roadway with severe injuries lying near a Chevy Tahoe with front-end damage.
The pedestrian, later identified as 76-year-old Sharon Peggy Kleinmintz, was then taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Detectives say initial investigation revealed that the Chevy Tahoe, driven by 51-year-old Robert Bennett, was traveling south on Midway Park Drive, while Kleinmintz was walking east on the sidewalk along Walnut Branch Lane.
Police say when Kleinmintz reached the intersection, she attempted to cross Midway Park Drive in an unmarked crosswalk, and that’s when the Tahoe struck her.
Bennett failed to yield the right-of-way and he has since been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield to pedestrian traffic, according to a news release.
The investigation into this collision remains active and ongoing.
