If someone saved your life, you’d probably be pretty grateful, wouldn’t you? Well in today’s world of instant gratification, money-back guarantees, and ambulance-chasing lawyers, just being saved may not be enough.
The case in question tonight: a guy out in Colorado who was rescued from floods last year, and now he’s suing the people who saved him. His lawyers say the rescue crew was “negligent”, and that’s worth $500 thousand.
“Negligence” is a key term in this case, because, generally speaking, you can’t sue rescue crews for doing their jobs unless they’re negligent in their duties. They’re trying to save you. But that doesn’t mean they necessarily will. In fact, just last year, courts found that even police don’t actually have a “special duty to protect” you, which protects them if you become the victim of a crime.
So if you’re rescued, but not rescued to your satisfaction, is it okay to sue? Our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, hit the streets to find out…
