If someone saved your life, you’d probably be pretty grateful, wouldn’t you? Β Well in today’s world of instant gratification, money-back guarantees, and ambulance-chasing lawyers, just being saved may not be enough.

The case in question tonight: a guy out in Colorado who was rescued from floods last year, and now he’s suing the people who saved him. Β His lawyers say the rescue crew was “negligent”, and that’s worth $500 thousand.

“Negligence” is a key term in this case, because, generally speaking, you can’t sue rescue crews for doing their jobs unless they’re negligent in their duties. Β They’re trying to save you. Β But that doesn’t mean they necessarily will. Β In fact, just last year, courts found that even police don’t actually have a “special duty to protect” you, which protects them if you become the victim of a crime.
