CHARLOTTE, NC– The Mint Hill community gathered this weekend to remember Kilah Davenport and to support her family. Sunday night, nearly 100 people lit candles and said prayers for the 4-year-old who died Thursday evening. Back in 2012, Kilah was badly beaten by her step-father, Joshua Houser, causing severe brain injuries. He’s been charged with felony child abuse and is spending 7-10 years in prison. Leslie Davenport, Kilah’s grandmother says despite their heartache, the fight for tougher child-abuse laws must go on. “We’re not giving up in Washington,” says Davenport “… We’re going to make sure every state has penalties for child-abuse that fit these crimes.” A national version of Kilah’s law has made its way through the U.S. House, it is now making it’s way through the Senate. A Celebration of Life for Kilah is taking place Saturday at 2:30 at the Oaks Event Center in Midland. It is open to the public.
