Imagine being in your early 20’s and competing in all kinds of sports. But all of a sudden, a virus attacks your heart, leaving you sidelined for decades.
That’s what happened to Indian Trail resident Tom Aspenwall. At the age of 21, the most simplistic task became a monumental struggle. But 27 years later, Aspenwall received a heart transplant, which finally gave him the opportunity to be active once again.
Earlier this month, Aspenwall took part in the Transplant Games in Houston, Texas. He competed in this biennial event against other transplant recipients in events like shot-put, discus throw, and long throw.
