BALTIMORE, M.D. — The Baltimore Ravens cut star running back Ray Rice and the NFL has suspended him indefinitely after new elevator surveillance footage shows him allegedly knocking his fiancee unconscious.
Rice was originally suspended for the first two games of the NFL season. However, after the new video was released Monday, the team decided to part ways with Rice.
The altercation between Rice and his then fiancee Janay Palmer allegedly occurred at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City in February.
The video clearly shows Rice striking Palmer, who then hits her head on the elevator hand rail as she is falling to the ground. Rice then attempts to drag an unconscious Palmer out of the elevator.
Rice and Palmer were both initially arrested on simple assault charges following the incident but Rice has since been indicted for the more serious charge of aggravated assault, while the charge against Palmer was dropped.
Rice rejected a plea offer in the case, instead opting for a diversion program for first time offenders that will expunge the charges upon completion.
Palmer and Rice have married since the incident and Plamer indicated that she was partly at fault for the altercation.
