DETROIT (AP) β€” Max Scherzer escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, Rajai (rah-JY’) Davis and J.D. Martinez homered, and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 4-2 to pull into a tie with the Royals atop the AL Central. Scherzer, who allowed one run and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, is 16-5.

CINCINNATI (AP) β€” Devin Mesoraco (mehz-uh-RAH’-koh) homered and drove in three runs in leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-5 victory that ended their six-game losing streak against the St. Louis Cardinals. The NL Central-leading Cards lost for only the second time in 11 games but maintained their 4Β½-game lead over Pittsburgh, which also lost.

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” Adam LaRoche kept up his torrid stretch with two hits and two RBIs, and the Washington Nationals essentially put to rest any thought that there is still a serious race for the NL East title with a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves. New Nats closer Drew Storen saved his third game in three nights and Washington raised its lead to nine games over the Braves, reducing their magic number to clinch the NL East to 10.

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Jacob deGrom burnished his NL rookie of the year credentials by pitching three-hit ball for eight dominant innings, and the New York Mets held on to beat the Colorado Rockies 2-0 last night for their sixth win in seven games. The victory came after the Mets learned captain David Wright would be shut down for the rest of the season because of inflammation in his left shoulder.

NEW YORK (AP) β€” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) did not rule out the possibility of former Ravens running back Ray Rice returning to play in the league after serving a suspension for domestic violence. But Goodell said first the league would have to be “fully confident” that Rice has addressed his personal issues, and paid a price for his past behavior.
