PANTHERS-HARDY

Panthers defensive end Hardy returns to practice

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy returned to practice one day after being excused from work to meet with his attorney.

Hardy practiced Thursday in full pads, going through warmups while Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” blared in the background from the portable speakers on the field.

Hardy’s attorney Chris Fialko said he met with his client Wednesday but wouldn’t say what was discussed or why it was necessary for the Pro Bowl player to miss practice.

The team’s franchise player was convicted on two domestic violence charges July 15 following an altercation with his ex-girlfriend at his apartment in March. Hardy has appealed and a jury trial is set for Nov. 17.

Carolina has followed the NFL’s lead in not suspending Hardy before the appeal is heard.

NASCAR-STEWART

Sheriff: Investigation of Stewart crash complete

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) β€” An upstate New York sheriff says he has completed his investigation into the death of a driver struck by NASCAR champion Tony Stewart during a sprint car race last month. The district attorney will announce late next week whether Stewart will face any charges.

Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said Thursday he has submitted the investigation, including enhanced video, to prosecutors for review. The statement said neither Povero nor District Attorney R. Michael Tantillo would comment further.

Stewart’s car struck and killed 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. on the dirt track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Aug. 9. Ward had climbed out of his car and walked onto the track to confront Stewart after he spun out while racing alongside the three-time NASCAR champion.

T25-GEORGIA-GETTING OFFENSIVE

Georgia offense looks to end drought in Columbia

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) β€” Georgia is one of the nation’s most dynamic offensive teams.

Well, except when the Bulldogs travel to South Carolina.

Sixth-ranked Georgia hasn’t scored more than 20 points at Williams-Brice Stadium in the past two decades. The last nine trips to Columbia have produced an average of just 13 points a game.

Compare that with Georgia’s other games. Since a 35-7 loss at South Carolina two years ago, the Bulldogs are averaging nearly 37 points a game and have been held under 20 only a couple of times.

Georgia (1-0) will be looking to reverse that trend when it travels to No. 24 South Carolina on Saturday. This is the Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference opener, while the Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1) can’t afford another loss after being routed by Texas A&M.

CAMPBELL-CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

Charleston Southern powers past Campbell, 34-10

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) β€” Christian Reyes, Danny Croghan III, Mike Holloway ran for touchdowns in the second half to rally Charleston Southern to a 34-10 victory over Campbell on Thursday night.

Austin Brown was 8 for 15 for 154 yards passing with two touchdowns, and also ran for 85 yards for Charleston Southern (3-0).

Brown’s 17-yard pass to Nathan Prater early in the first quarter put the Buccaneers up 7-0.

Dakota Wolf’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jabri Ridenhour tied the score early in the second quarter, and Mitchell Brown’s 44-yard field goal put Campbell (0-3) ahead 10-7 with a little more than six minutes remaining in the first half.

Reyes’ 1-yard scoring run put Charleston Southern back ahead for good, 13-10, in the third quarter, and Croghan had a 2-yard TD run midway through the period. The Buccaneers added two scores late β€” on Brown’s 28-yard pass to Jared Scotland and Holloway’s 26-yard run.

CLEMSON-HAZING LAWSUIT

Ex-Clemson soccer player sues over alleged hazing

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β€” An ex-Clemson women’s soccer player has sued Tigers coach Eddie Radwanski, his assistants and several former teammates for a 2011 hazing ritual in which she says she was blindfolded and ran into a brick wall at the team’s playing field.

A 36-page suit on behalf of Haley Hunt was filed last month in state court in Pickens County. Hunt says Radwanski and his staff discussed a hazing plan with Tiger veterans that had the freshman doing “humiliating and demeaning acts.

Hunt, 21, says in the complaint she was ordered to sprint while blindfolded and ran into the wall. Hunt says she suffered severe head trauma and had to eventually give up soccer, but still attends Clemson and is a senior

Clemson disputes Hunt’s characterizations of what took place.

US MID-AMATEUR

Scott Harvey wins US Mid-Amateur

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) β€” Scott Harvey won the U.S. Mid-Amateur on Thursday to earn a spot in the Masters, beating Brad Nurski 6 and 5 in the 36-hole final.

The 36-year-old Harvey, a real estate property manager from Greensboro, North Carolina, had a 4-up lead after the morning round on Saucon Valley’s Old Course.

Nurski, a 35-year-old railroad conductor and switchman from St. Joseph, Missouri, was trying to become the first left-hander to win the event.

The match marked only the second time that co-medalists have met in the final in the 34-year history of the event for players 25 and older.
