NEW YORK (AP) β€” Novels by Marilynne Robinson, Jane Smiley and Richard Powers were among the 10 nominees on the fiction longlist for the National Book Awards.

The selections ranged from novels by such established authors as Robinson and Smiley to a pair of debut story collections: Iraq war veteran Phil Klay’s “Redeployment” and Molly Antopol’s “The UnAmericans.” Also chosen was John Darnielle, leader of the band the Mountain Goats, for “Wolf in White Van.”

Other nominees included Rabih Alameddine’s “An Unnecessary Woman,” Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See,” Emily St. John Mandel’s “Station Eleven” and Elizabeth McCracken’s “Thunderstruck & Other Stories.”

The fiction longlist, announced Wednesday by the National Book Foundation, caps a week that included the release of longlists for young people’s literature, poetry and nonfiction.
