Winston sits for start of Clemson game
UNDATED (AP) β Florida State will be trying to protect its No. 1 ranking without its top quarterback at home against 22nd-ranked Clemson.
Heisman Trophy winner Jameis (JAY’-mihs) Winston has been suspended for the game for making vulgar and offensive comments about female anatomy on campus this week. At first, Winston was only going to sit out the first half against the Tigers, but late last night the school extended the suspension to the entire game.
Red-shirt sophomore Sean Maguire will start for the Seminoles in the showdown of ACC rivals. The Tigers will showcase their hurry-up offense behind quarterback Cole Stoudt who’s thrown for 446 yards and has a 63.3 completion percentage.
Offenses are expected to be showcased when No. 2 Oregon visits Washington State. The 3-0 Ducks high-powered offense is run by Heisman Trophy hopeful Marcus Mariota (mehr-ee-OH’-tah) and features a rushing attack that is averaging 243 yards a game. The 1-2 Cougars boast the nation’s top passing offense that ran up 630 yards in the air against Portland State last week.
No. 3 Alabama hosts Florida in an SEC battle of prolific offenses. Neither team has been held under 500 yards offense this season. Alabama has gained 1,705 yards in winning its first three games. The Gators are averaging 50.5 points in getting off to a 2-0 start.
Fourth-ranked Oklahoma takes its seven-game winning streak on the road to West Virginia. The 3-0 Sooners will be facing a Mountaineers team that is averaging 91 plays and 564 yards in offense.
There are 13 games involving 14 ranked teams on the schedule.

AL Central showdown…Wildcard races
UNDATED (AP) β The battle for the AL Central lead continues today in Kansas City where the Royals host division-leading Detroit. The Tigers open play with a game-and-a-half lead over the Royals.
Max Scherzer takes a second shot at getting his 17th win of the season for the Tigers. The Royals counter with James Shields who is 14-7. Detroit is 12-5 against KC this season.
The Royals and Oakland are holding on to the two AL wildcard spots, with Seattle just a half game back. The Athletics host Philadelphia, while the Mariners try to make it two wins in a row at Houston. Chris Young looks for his career high 13th win of the season for Seattle.
The Dodgers resume their chase of the NL West title now that they’ve wrapped up a playoff spot. LA is at Wrigley for an afternoon meeting with the Cubs. The Dodgers head into the game with a 3 and a-half game lead over San Francisco for the division lead. The Giants occupy one of the NL wildcard spots heading into their game tonight at San Diego.
Pittsburgh has the other wildcard spot with nine days left in the regular season and can help secure it with another win at home against the Brewers. Milwaukee has fallen 4 and a-half games back in the wild card chase. The Brew Crew has dropped three in a row.
The NL Central leading Cardinals can secure a post-season spot with a win against the Reds coupled with a Brewers loss in Pittsburgh.

Pernice has comfy lead
KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) β Tom Pernice (pur’-NEES), Jr. takes a commanding four-shot lead into the second round of the Champions Tour’s Hawaii Championship after a scorching opening round 12-under 60. Mike Allen starts the day in second place. Pernice is looking for his third win on the Champions Tour and second of the year.
GOLF-YOKOHAMA TIRE LPGA CLASSIC
Reto holds lead
PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) β South Africa’s Paula Reto takes a three-shot lead into the weekend at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. The former Purdue star is looking for her first Tour win in her first season. South Korea’s Mi Jung Hur holds down second, while top-ranked Stacy Lewis is four off the pace to start the day.
