CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Wilson was enjoying a flashback to his youth today when he took a walk through the Mint Museum Uptown’s Level 5 expansion space through The Boombox Project.
The Boombox Project is a pop-up photography show featuring photographer Lyle Owerko.Β The 5,000 square foot exhibit is the museum’s first public use of the 15,000 square foot expansion space on Level 5 of the Mint Museum.
Owerko’s obsession with boomboxes started when he acquired a mint condition late 1970s Victor JVC boombox.Β His exhibit takes us back to the 80s, a time of mix tapes, early rappers and break dancing.Β Β Owerko’s book The Boombox Project: the machines, the music and the urban underground, which was published in conjuction with his exhibit, will be available at the exhibit.
The Boombox Project exhibit which was organized by Chandra Johnson’s SOCO Gallery.Β The exhibit is free and runs through October 19th.Β Visitors will need to stop by the Guest Services desk to obtain a sticker which gives them free admission to the exhibit during regular musem hours Wednesday through Sundays.Β
The Level 5 expansion space is a part of the next phase of the museum’s future growth and will experiment with new and creative art concepts while accommodating larger exhibits.
