Cam Newton’s Crash Site Among List of Worst

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte Department of Transportation says it will evaluate the Cam Newton accident report from an engineering standpoint to see what exactly happened at the intersection Tuesday.

The Panthers Quarterback crash happened on South Church Street at West Hill Street on the bridge over Interstate 277.

That intersection is listed as the fourth worst in the city for crashes.

Newton’s truck collided with a car, leaving Newton on the roadside with two fractures to his lower back.

“You see them on TV, and you think of them as like these super heroes kind of, and then something like this happens,” said Rob Connors “And, you realize that they’re vulnerable just like us.”

Just like 45 other drivers that crashed at South Church and Hill in the past five years.

That might not seem like a high number, but with an average of more than 10,000 drivers passing a day, that makes it the fourth highest accident location in Charlotte.

“It just happens all the time,” said driver Summer Cook.

What caused Newton’s crash, police wouldn’t say Tuesday.

At least four witnesses called 911 for help. “The truck turned over,” said the first caller.

Another caller told 911, “He needs an ambulance.”

Drivers on at the intersection described the dangers.

“Trying to cross over it really is a hard,” said Zakeyla Carr.

They say Hill Street might look like an on-ramp to the I-277 loop, but a stop sign is the one thing keeping drivers from dodging through three lanes of traffic.

“There’s so much going on right here, and when you try to pull out the cars are coming so close to you, you can’t really get by,” said Carr.

The injuries of the other driver weren’t available Tuesday. Medics did take that person to the hospital.
