CHARLOTTE, NC β Police are investigating a case of a 14-year-old boy who shot and killed a suspected home intruderΒ TuesdayΒ evening.Β Officers swarmed the home afterΒ 5:15.Β
WCCB Charlotte is concealing the boyβs name due to his age. His family says the teenager was visiting his grandmother, Anna Marie Wyant, at her Plantation Falls home when two suspects tried to break into the back of the home.
βWhat would have happened if he wasnβt right there?β said George Wyant.
Wyant was out of town when he got the call from a neighbor who said his grandson was just forced to shoot an intruder.Β Police say they heard two intruders trying to bust into the back of the home. One suspect ran away. The boy grabbed a handgun and killed the other.
The boyβs brother, Gregory Hernandez, says their grandfather taught them to use guns.
βHeβd take us shooting,β said Hernandez.
βIf youβre going to have a gun in the house, you better know how to use it,β said Wyant.
This is the second time in two months Wyant says thieves have targeted his home. The first time, he says they took some of his wifeβs belongings. Still, he never expected his young grandson to have to take a life.
βNo, youβre not proud, itβs not thing to be proud of. But Iβm happy the way it turned out,β said Wyant.Β Glad his family is alive.
Police donβt have a description of the suspect who ran away from the home.Β They have yet to release the name of the suspect the boy killed.
