Mistrial Declared in Case of Man Charged with Killing Monroe Teen

BALTIMORE, M.D. — A mistrial has been declared in the case of Michael Johnson, the man accused of killing Monroe teenager Phylicia Barnes in 2010.

The judge in Johnson’s current case decided that the prosecutor used material that should have been withheld in the trial.

Johnson was convicted of second degree murder in 2013. The judge in that case granted him a new trial citing an issue with the prosecution.

Barnes was visiting her sister Deena in Baltimore when she went missing in February of 2010. Johnson had previously dated Barnes’ sister Deena and was the last person to see her alive. Johnson informed authorities that Barnes said she was going to get something to eat.

Barnes’ body was found about 50 miles northeast of Baltimore last April in the Susquehanna river.
