CHARLOTTE, NC — Welcoming the new year in Charlotte with thousands of others in Uptown was new for Stephanie Spraggins.

“This is the first year here,” said Spraggins. “I’m super excited!”
Β
Two years ago, ice skating and family activities weren’t on the menu for many when the clock struckΒ Midnight.Β Police arrested 20 people that night and four juveniles when the party was in the heart of the city.
Β
After that, New Year’s Eve celebrations moved to Romare Bearden Park. More than 12,000 people came. Police only arrested five.
Β
This year at NASCAR Hall of Fame, police patrolled throughout the night.
Β
“We’re not anticipating any problems,” said Maj. Diego Anselmo. “It’s very family oriented event.”
Β
Spraggins agreed, “I like the environment. I don’t have to worry about losing them as much.”
Β
Locations have changed over the years, and so have the day’s events.Β Last year kids’ celebration started atΒ noon. Parents were disappointed when the celebrations kicked off in the evening this year.
Β
“We thought they were gong to have activities earlier,” said Blanca Salguero.
Β
Last year, people also heard multiple performers sing. This year, the crowd enjoyed one band.
Β
“It’s definitely fun for adults,” said Salguero.
Β
The biggest part of the night will never change: the countdown when the crown rises over Queen City.
Β
“It’s real!” said Spraggins. “We’re here! We’re going to see it!”
