CHARLOTTE, NC– Two 14-year-olds found themselves in front of a police officer’s gun Friday after they were spotted with a BB gun outside Thomasboro Elementary School in West Charlotte.

Police say a woman working in the area called 911 after she saw the boys walking near the school with what she thought was a dangerous handgun.

When the school resource officer saw the students, he thought the same thing. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the boys threw the BB gun to the side when the officer pulled up. The officer ordered the children to the ground at gunpoint. Backup officers confirmed the boys did have a BB gun.

Students were not in school Friday because it was a teacher work day. The boys told police they were going to shoot cans behind the school.

Police say the school suspended the boys. One is charged with possession of a weapon on school property.
