CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two oak trees fell on a Dilworth area home last night, forcing the residents to evacuate until the damages have been repaired.

A family of four was inside the home, which has a tax value of $800,000, but fortunately no one was injured in the incident.

The family says they knew something was wrong when they heard crackling and then both trees fell on their Linganore Place home.

City arborist Donald McSween says both trees were about 125 years old and had root rot.  It’s a dangerous condition that isn’t always easy to spot.

"I suggest they have them inspected on a regular basis by a certified arborist," said McSween.  "And even with that, sometimes it’s not going to be real apparent."

McSween says decaying trees often have mushrooms growing at their base.

The family has been temporarily dislodged and the house has been declared unsafe, as crews work to remove the trees.
